Frequently Asked Questions about Foreign Language English Classes at NC State

Q: My advisor told me that I must take a course in my major at the same time as my English class. Can I take my English class next semester?

A: English classes should be taken immediately. For students who are required to take three or more English classes, at least one class must be taken each semester until the requirement is met.

Q: I have to do research and take other classes. I don't have time for English classes.

A: English classes are designed to help you do your academic work more efficiently. For this reason, they must be taken immediately. If you are required to take classes, it means that your English is in some way not likely to be adequate for your academic work. As a result, you need to make time for the English classes.

Q: I'm required to take more than one class. Which should I take first?

A: FLE 201 should be taken first, although it may be taken at the same time as FLE 400. Because FLE 201 and FLE 400 concentrate on different areas of spoken English, many students take these courses together and wait to take a writing course (FLE 110 or 402) until their second semester. Others take FLE 201 and a writing course first, and FLE 400 during the second semester.

Q: Why do I have to take English courses? My TOEFL score was good enough for admission here.

A: TOEFL is an incomplete test. Many students who pass TOEFL still have incomplete mastery of English in one or more areas. TOEFL tests receptive skills (listening, knowledge of grammar, and reading). It does not test productive skills (writing and speaking), even though productive skills are essential to your success at NCSU. The placement tests and FLE courses at NCSU focus on productive skills.

Q: I'm not required to take any classes, but I want to. Can I still take a class?

A: Of course! You may take any FLE class that you believe will benefit you. FLE classes at NC State are not intended to be remedial. They are intended to benefit all international students who desire to improve their advanced English in writing and speaking.

Q: I'm a visiting scholar at NC State. What courses can I take?

A: There are no courses at NC State specifically designed for visiting scholars. Whether visiting scholars can take classes depends on visa status and a variety of issues best answered by the Office of International Student and Scholar Services (515-2961). Visiting scholars who wish to take FLE classes must be officially registered in the class.

Q: I need to get on a waiting list for a closed section. What's the best way to do this?

A: Contact Toby Brody or call 515-9299 and leave a detailed message. Always include your full name, your student ID number and a phone number.
