Policies for all FLE students

English Placement Test

All undergraduate NC State students with a score of 590 or below on the paper-based TOEFL or 243 or below on the computer-based TOEFL must take the English Placement Test at the beginning of their first semester of study.

International graduate students must take the test if required by their departments. Contact your department or the Graduate School for information.

Required English classes must be taken in the first semester of study.

Students who are required to take more than one English class must take at least one class each semester until their English requirements are met.

Students who are not required to take FLE classes may take any FLE class they believe would benefit them.

Special policies for Graduate Students

Graduate students must take 9 hours each semester in order to be registered. A class exceeding the required 9 hours may be taken for a grade of AUDIT and is exempt from tuition charges.

Students taking courses for a grade of AUDIT must register for the class, attend, and do all the work, as if they were taking the class for a grade. A grade of AUDIT will only be awarded for successful completion of the requirements of the course.

Unsuccessful Auditors will receive a grade of NR and will be required to repeat the course.

Special policies and information for Undergraduate Students

Students may be required to take FLE 100 prior to enrolling in FLE 101.

FLE 101 is available for non-native speakers of English.

For information on special sections, contact the ESL coordinator at 515-9299.

Visiting Scholars and Sitting in on a Class

Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures policy does not permit unregistered students in FLE classes. Visiting scholars usually do not have a visa status that allows registration for classes. For more information, contact the Office of International Scholar and Student Services at 515-2961.
