"A" licensure - Licensure-Only

Licensure-only candidates are individuals who are not currently employed as public school teachers and are not working full-time in another profession.

  • Although it may be possible to take some of the required classes during the late afternoon, evening or in summer school, there are classes, school observations and student teaching requirements that must be completed during the traditional public school day.
  • The French/Spanish requirements listed below must be met. Any that have been satisfied prior to entering the program will not have to be repeated, but any requirements that have not been satisfied must be met with the NC State courses listed below.
  • All licensure-only candidates must complete at least one 300 or 400 level course in French/Spanish in order to be recommended for student teaching.
  • The Professional Education requirements listed below must also be met. ECI 205 includes at least 25 hours of observation in an assigned public school. One full semester must be dedicated to student teaching, courses ECI 423 and 424.
  • It is not possible for students to work full time or take any other courses during the student teaching semester. ECI 423 & ECI 424 are offered fall semesters only.

French courses: At least 33 credits at the 3rd and 4th year level (credits below in parentheses)

  • French phonetics/linguistics/pronunciation (3)
  • Literature (6)
  • Civilization (3)
  • Advanced French Conversation (3)
  • French grammar/writing/composition (3)
  • Senior Seminar in French Studies (3)
  • French electives (12)

Spanish courses: At least 33 credits at the 3rd and 4th year level (credits below in parentheses)

  • Spanish phonetics/linguistics/pronunciation (3)
  • Literature: Spain and Latin America (9)
  • Civilization (3)
  • Advanced Spanish Conversation (3)
  • Spanish grammar/writing/composition (3)
  • Senior Seminar in Hispanic Studies (3)
  • Spanish electives (9)

Professional Education Requirements: (27 credits)

  • ECI 205 - Introduction to Teaching Humanities and Social Sciences (3)
  • ELP 344 - School and Society (3)
  • EDP 304 - Educational Psychology (3)
  • PSY 376 - Developmental Psychology (3)
  • ECI 423 - Methods and Materials of Teaching Modern Foreign Languages (5)
  • ECI 424 - Student Teaching in French/Spanish (8)
  • Passing score on the Specialty Area PRAXIS exams, as determined by the State Department of Public Instruction
  • Teaching/Technology Portfolio, in conjunction with ECI 423/424
  • Recommended courses (5 credits):  COM 110 Public Speaking (3); ECI 296    Technology, via Distance Education (2)
