About Advising For FLL Majors
|
(Note :The Director
of Undergraduate Advising and the Associate Department Head
are available to answer any questions you may have).
|
Materials
All FLL Majors Should Have
- Students should read the
"Handbook for Foreign Language Majors" before meeting with their advisor.
The "Handbook" is available on-line at http//:sasw.chass.ncsu.edu/fl/hand.htm
- Students should familiarize
themselves with the curriculum check sheets, included in the Handbook
and their individual degree key:
- "Key
Points of Information" published by CHASS (included in "Handbook") lists
all General Education Requirements for the College of Humanities and Social
Sciences. Please read these materials before your first advising meeting.
-
Communication with Our Advisees
- We are now able to communicate
with all our students through e-mail and we post important advising information
and notices from career planning. It is important to check your Unity e-mail
account frequently. Remember that all NC State students have Unity accounts.
Your user-id is your first initial, middle initial, and the first six letters
of your last name. Your password is your social security number (unless you
have changed your password). Should you have any problems accessing your account,
please call University Computing Services at 515-4357.
Tips For Registration
- You will be contacted by Dr.
Marchi about advising prior to the beginning of the advising period.
- Advising in the fall is mid-October;
in the spring it is mid-March.
- Review the suggested sequence
of courses and cycle of courses in the "Handbook for Foreign Language Majors"
before planning your schedule.
- You will obtain your individual
PIN from your advisor after you have completed your Plan of Work.
- Students now have access to their
curriculum degree requirements and automated degree audit [ADA].
on NC State's Records and Registration homepage. Before consulting with
their advisor, students should access their degree requirements and ADA and
complete a Plan of Work for at least one semester.
Student Portfolios
- All majors will submit a copy
of a major research paper during the semester in which they are to graduate;
it will go in the student's portfolio. The paper should be representative
of the student's best work. In the final semester of the student's senior
year, the portfolio paper will be read by foreign language faculty who will
evaluate it for grammatical correctness, writing style, interpretive skills,
and cultural knowledge. The anonymity of each student is carefully protected
in the evaluation of student portfolios, which are used to monitor our major
programs, and to help define curriculum goals as part of the on-going assessment
of our programs. Evaluations of the portfolios do not affect the g.p.a. or
a student's standing in the department.
Graduating Seniors
- You need to see Dr. Marchi during
the first two weeks of classes of the semester in which you intend to graduate.
He will verify that you have fulfilled the necessary requirements, prepare
your graduation file, and forward it to the Dean's office.
Study Abroad
- The department encourages all
students to participate in a study abroad program. Study
Abroad Office, 2118 Pullen (515-2087) is the place to go. Also consult
your academic advisor. Remember that it is important to plan early and to
do careful research in order to take the best advantage of the numerous options
that are available for students wishing to go abroad. Most important, make
absolutely sure that all the necessary forms for study abroad are completed
before you begin your travel away from the university. You will need to see
Ms. Navey-Davis [Spanish] or Dr. Marchi [all other languages] who will pre-approve
your courses. Before doing so, please consult the Checklist
for Students Intending to Study Abroad.
-
-
-
-
- Policy on
the transfer of foreign language study abroad credit to our major programs
-
- Students must receive a grade
of "C" or better in a course for the credit to transfer.
- Students may apply up to
five courses from a foreign university toward the major. The limit
on study abroad transfer hours applied toward the major does not apply
in the case of NC State's own programs.
- Dr. Marchi or Ms. Navey-Davis
will review course materials upon the student's return from abroad and
process transfer credit.
- Students requesting study
abroad credit in other disciplines must seek the approval of the appropriate
department(s), or in some cases of the Dean's office, and abide by their
limits and guidelines.
University Career Center
- Located in 2100 Pullen Hall (515-2396),
the center offers students career counseling, on-campus interviews, a career/employer
research library, access to internship information, workshops on job-search
topics including resume and cover-letter writing as well as interviewing techniques.
Mr. Woody Catoe assumes special
responsibilities for students majoring in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
Visit the center early in your university career to become familiar with the
resources available.
Extracurricular Activities
- The department supports and promotes
the study of language and culture outside the
- classroom through numerous clubs
and honor societies. Speak with your faculty advisor for
- more information. Also, check
the information about Language Clubs and Honor Societies
on the FLL Homepage.
