Course Materials: Swaagat, available from Hillsborough Street Textbooks (919-664-8733).

Course Description and Objectives: Elementary Hindi I provides the first semester of training in spoken and written Hindi.  Our primary objective is to develop speaking and listening proficiency through a variety of situational, contextualized, and interactive exercises.   Elementary Hindi I consists of two components:

Grammar, Reading and Writing: This component of the course, which meets one hour daily, is devoted primarily to the acquisition of the fundamentals of Hindi grammar and basic vocabulary.  You will learn the Hindi writing system (Devanagari) within the first few days of class.  Our primary objective is to acquire the tools to begin speaking in Hindi as soon as possible.

Conversation: In this component of the course, which meets one hour daily, you will participate in interactive speaking and listening drill, aimed at developing basic oral competency in spoken Hindi. We will take full advantage of being in India by using immersion methods including interactions with native speakers and task-based assignments.

Course Components:

Attendance: You are expected to attend every class.  5 points will be deducted for each absence.

Class Participation: You may earn up to 5 points each day for your participation in the Conversation section.

Homework: There normally will be one short homework assignment daily.  Homework is due in class the following day.  Since language learning depends on the continuous accumulation of vocabulary and grammar, you MUST complete homework on a daily basis.  Homework will be graded with the following system: + for 5 points, “check” for 4 points, and - for 3 points.  Homework not turned in will receive zero points.   To ensure proper credit, YOU MUST WRITE the homework number (e.g. 1A, 1B) on each homework paper.

Dictations: There will be a total of 9 short Hindi dictations, each worth 10 points.

Quizzes: A short Quiz will be given for each lesson.  There will be a total of 9 Quizzes and each Quiz will be worth 25 points.

Exams: There will be two Exams, both interviews conducted outside the class.  The Midterm Exam, due June 9, is worth 100 points, and the Final Exam, due by June 30, is worth 200 points.

Important Policies:

1. Academic Integrity: Every student is expected to abide strictly by the NCSU Code of Student Conduct, including the use of the Honor Pledge on all assignments, quizzes and exams.  Students must not give or receive aid on any dictation, essay or exam, even if it is "take-home" or “on-line,” unless specifically told otherwise by the instructor.

2. Attendance and Incompletes: Assignments missed due to unexcused absences cannot be made up without permission from the instructor.  More than five unexcused absences during the program will result in an “F” grade for the course. See the NC State attendance regulation for the definitions of excused and unexcused absences.  As per university policy, a grade of "Incomplete" can only be given when a) the student has been attending class and turning in all work on time throughout the program and b) the student submits a valid, written excuse for not being able to complete the final course requirements at the end of the program.

3. Disabilities: Reasonable accommodations will be made for students with verifiable disabilities.  In order to take advantage of available accommodations, students should contact the Study Abroad Office before departure.  For more information on NC State’s policy on working with students with disabilities, please see the Academic Accommodations for Students with Disabilities Regulation.
