Course Description and Objectives:  Intermediate Hindi-Urdu I begins the second year of training in spoken and written Hindi-Urdu.  Our primary objective is to continue to increase speaking and listening proficiency through a variety of situational, contextualized, and function-oriented exercises.  In addition, since language and culture are so deeply interrelated, we explore various aspects of South Asian art, history, life and society through discussions, field trips, and interactions with native speakers.  Intermediate Hindi-Urdu I consists of two sections:

1. Reading, Writing, and Grammar: This component of the course, which meets one hour daily, is devoted to intermediate topics in Grammar and Vocabulary.  In general, each session may include readings from the Hindi-Urdu course-pack, review of grammar topics, and discussion.  Reading selections will be assigned in advance and you are expected to come to class prepared.

2. Conversation = “Baatcheet”: This component of the course, which meets one hour daily, is designed to improve your listening comprehension, speaking skills and vocabulary, while exploring various aspects of South Asian culture. We will take full advantage of being in India by using immersion methods including interactions with native speakers and task-based assignments.

Grading System:

Attendance: You are expected to attend every class.  Five points will be deducted from your total score for each absence.

Class Participation: You may earn up to 5 points each day for your participation in the Conversation section.

Homework: There normally will be one short homework assignment daily.  Homework is due in class the following day.  Homework will be graded with the following system: + for 5 points, “check” for 4 points, and - for 3 points.  Homework not turned in will receive zero points.  To ensure proper credit, YOU MUST WRITE the homework number (e.g. HW1A, HW2B) on each homework paper.

Quizzes: There will be a total of 9 Quizzes.  Each Quiz will be worth 25 points.  Missed Quizzes cannot be made up.

Exams: There will be two Exams in the form of “take home” essays.  The Midterm Exam (100 points) is due in class on June 16.  The Final Exam (200 points) is due June 30.

Important Policies:

1. Academic Integrity: Every student is expected to abide strictly by the NCSU Code of Student Conduct, including the use of the Honor Pledge on all assignments, quizzes and exams.  Students must not give or receive aid on any dictation, essay or exam, even if it is "take-home" or “on-line,” unless specifically told otherwise by the instructor.

2. Attendance and Incompletes: Assignments missed due to unexcused absences cannot be made up without permission from the instructor.  More than five unexcused absences during the program will result in an “F” grade for the course. See the NC State attendance regulation for the definitions of excused and unexcused absences.  As per university policy, a grade of "Incomplete" can only be given when a) the student has been attending class and turning in all work on time throughout the program and b) the student submits a valid, written excuse for not being able to complete the final course requirements at the end of the program.

3. Disabilities: Reasonable accommodations will be made for students with verifiable disabilities.  In order to take advantage of available accommodations, students should contact the Study Abroad Office before departure.  For more information on NC State’s policy on working with students with disabilities, please see the Academic Accommodations for Students with Disabilities Regulation.
