In May and June of 1999, fourteen students spent five weeks learning Hindi and studying Indian culture at JNU and on excursions around North India.

Courses offered:

FLN 101: Elementary Hindi-Urdu

FLN 201: Intermediate Hindi-Urdu

FL 495: Introduction to Indian Literature and Culture

Courses also included visits to concerts, lectures, and many sites of historical, social and cultural interest.

In addition, a number of guest lecturers were included in the academic program, including:

  • Shabana Azmi, actress and Member of Parliament
  • Javed Akhtar, poet and lyricist
  • Debu Chatterjee, sitar player
  • G.N. Kaushal, director of repertory company, National School of Drama
  • Arundati Roy, author and activist
