German Studies Major
Inauguration Celebration

On March 12, 2008, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures celebrated the addition of a third major to their offerings, which already has 18 students enrolled. A lively crowd of about 300 NC State students, faculty, administrators and visitors from the community browsed the information on the numerous tables and displays, listened to German music, acquired German books, sampled German sweets and beverages, chatted in English and German, and listened to the speeches by Dean Parcel, Dean Lomax, Dr. Burt from UNC-Wilmington, and the Consul General of the German Consulate in Atlanta, Dr. Lutz Görgens. The event, which was held in beautifully decorated Caldwell Lounge, showcased the three tracks of the new major, study abroad experiences and career opportunities, the German Honor Society, and the activities of the NC State German Club. It also informed about new interdisciplinary courses for the major, e.g. one focusing on German Science and Technology and one on “Green Germany” (from German nature poetry to environmental consciousness and technology). The well attended celebration was a success for all those with an interest in German Studies and for the growth of the humanities at NC State.
