and Social Sciences (CHASS)
College of Management (COM)
University General Education Requirement: Upon admission to NC State, all students who have earned a grade of C (77) or better in each of two years of high-school study of the same language [beginning w/ incoming class of Fall 2006 - students admitted prior to this - 2 years w/ a B (85) in each year or 3 years w/ a C in each year] are notified during New Student Orientation and will receive a notation on their Automated Degree Audit (ADA) stating that they have met the university foreign language proficiency requirement – the “equivalent” of FL 102 / FL Elementary II – as “FL* 100 High School *** PF.” This notation does not mean that students may enroll directly into FL 201, which is the minimum college requirement for CHASS and COM. In order to be sure that students have the prerequisite knowledge for FL 201 or above, students in these colleges are required to take the FL placement test during New Student Orientation if they have not taken the SAT II test or the AP test in foreign languages. Note: B.S. in CHASS follows FL 102 Proficiency Requirement [see below for further details].
Students who receive a notation of proficient in FL at the high school level, and then place into FL 101 or FL 102 level on the NC State placement exam, can continue in the same language as the one studied in high school, but will receive no credit towards graduation for FL 101. Credit hours will be given for FL101 if the language was not taken by the student in high school and is not the s tudent’s native language.
The department offers sixteen languages from which to choose
Please note that students may take the placement test in a given foreign language only once. They may not take the test once they are taking or have taken an FL course at NC State. If a student misrepresents this information, it is a violation of the University's Code of Student Conduct. If a student feels that s/he has placed too low or too high, please direct this concern and other questions regarding placement to the Associate Department Head, Dr. Dudley M. Marchi, Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, dmm@ncsu.edu.
TAKING THE PLACEMENT TEST - COMPUTERIZED PLACEMENT TESTS: The placement tests are offered M-F from 8-5 in the Foreign Language Technology Center (Old Laundry Building, near Poe Hall, at the corner of Current and Stinson). The test takes approximately 25-30 minutes. A lab assistant will set you up and print your test score.
Keep your score printout until you have finished your FL courses.

Native speakers of languages other than English do not take the NC State Placement Test and do not receive credit for FL 101-202 in their native language. They do, however, fulfill the foreign language proficiency requirement, as well as the foreign language requirement for CHASS and COM and can receive certification by contacting the Associate Department Head. The student will then need to consult with his/her advisor to choose a course that replaces the three credits required on the ADA for FL 201.
Students interested in other languages taught by the department (Arabic, Farsi, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, Chinese, Hindi, Urdu, Italian, Portuguese, or Russian) should consult the FLL home page in order to arrange a meeting with the appropriate language instructor. A non-computerized placement test will be administered. For students beginning a new language, they should register for FL* 101.
Transfer students are required to take the placement exam if they have not fulfilled their language requirement to ensure the appropriate level of study.
Advanced Placement Credit:
Students earning a score of 3 or 4 on the Advanced Placement Foreign Language Test in high school will have met the university proficiency requirement. A score of 3 places students into FL 201 and they can obtain three hours of advanced placement credit for FL 102 upon completion of FL 201 with a grade of C- or better on the first attempt With a score of 4 they can obtain three hours of advanced placement credit for FL 201 upon completion of FL 202 with a grade of C- or better on the first attempt. Students earning a score of 5 on the Advanced Placement Foreign Language Test can obtain six hours of advanced placement credit for FL 201 and 202 upon completion of a 300-level course with a grade of C- or better on the first attempt. Students who place into FL 202 on the SAT Subject Test or the NC State Placement Test will have met the FL 201 requirement and are eligible to receive three hours of advanced placement credit by enrolling in the course into which they placed and earning a grade of C- or better on the first attempt (i.e. students completing FL 202 with a C- or better on the first attempt will receive credit for FL 201 as well as FL 202. 1. Do I need to take the foreign language placement test?
If you have taken the SAT - II Subject Test and know your score, no. If you have taken the College Entrance Examination Board Advanced Placement Foreign Language Test and know your score, no. For students in the colleges of CALS, DSN, EDU, ENG, FOR, PAMS, and TEX– if you have fulfilled the university 102 proficiency requirement (see placement information above) and do not wish to take foreign language courses at NC State, no. If you have fulfilled the requirement, but do wish to continue to study a foreign language, yes. For students in CHASS and Management who have a 201 requirement, even if they have fulfilled the university proficiency requirement, yes.
2. All the sections of the language course I want are full. Is there a waiting list?
No. During the add/drop period at the beginning of the semester, spaces sometimes open up in classes.
Note: First and second year Spanish courses are usually filled to capacity. But if you have fulfilled the university FL 102 proficiency requirement, you may begin another language for which you will receive free elective credit. The other language classes (Arabic, Farsi, French, German, Italian, Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Chinese, Portuguese, Japanese, Russian, Hindi, and Urdu) normally have space available.
3. I placed slightly below the next level on the placement test. I've studied the language for at least two years in high-school and think I could do well in the next level. May I register for the course?
Contact the Associate Department Head who will discuss with you your foreign language experience, your interest in continuing to study a foreign language, and will advise you accordingly.
4. I believe I have fulfilled my foreign language proficiency based on my high-school courses, but this is not showing up on my degree report. What should I do?
For students during New Student orientation: it may take until the fall semester for your high-school transcript to be fully processed by Records and Registration clerks who verify your high-school foreign language grades. Your degree report should show the correct information by the fall advising session. For all other students: check with Records and Registration - a records clerk can double check you transcript. The Department does not handle high-school transcripts and the determination of FL 102 proficiency.
After classes begin . . .
5. I placed into a course that is either too difficult or too easy for me. What should I do?
Contact the Associate Department Head. The Department’s goal is to have students in the course that is at the right level for them. There are exceptions and students should see the Associate Head during the first week of the semester who will advise them accordingly.
IV. ABOUT THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE PLACEMENT TEST
The department uses the Computer Adaptive Placement Exam (CAPE) series from Brigham Young University to place students in French, German, and Spanish. The exams test the grammatical knowledge, as well as the reading comprehension of the student. The exam adapts to each individual by providing less difficult questions if the preceding question was missed, or more difficult questions if the previous question was answered correctly. This process continues until the student consistently answers questions correctly at one level, and misses three consecutive questions at the higher level. We have had very good success with this program. Most students are placed at the correct level, commensurate with their proficiency. The exam is administered in the CHASS Foreign Language Computing Lab and requires approximately 25-30 minutes to complete. The Latin placement test is also administered in the Computing Lab but it is not adaptive in nature. No appointment is generally needed for these four language placement exams. Exams for other languages vary in format. The appropriate language coordinator can explain the format and contents of the exam.
V. Foreign Language Revisions 2003
FL* 101 - This course is designed for beginners. Credit hours for fulfilling Graduation Requirements will be given for FL* 101 if the student has not taken the language in high school and if it is not the student’s native language. Whether or not students receive credit hours for the course, grades are computed in their GPA, and the course is used to count semester hours when calculating academic eligibility and academic load, including progress toward degree when included in an approved plan of study. [This is in agreement with the FLAC Recommendations (UNC-GA Foreign Language Access Committee) and with the Foreign Language Requirements currently in place at UNC-Chapel Hill].
FLS 102 / FLS 110 / FLF 110 or FL* 102 - Students will receive 3 hours free elective credit toward their Graduation Requirements for these courses. Credit will not be given for both FLS 110 and FLS 102 or FLF 110 and FLF 102.
FL* 201 / FLS 210 - Students who place into this course and pass it successfully on the first attempt with the grade of C- or better will receive 3 hours free elective credit for FL* 102 and 3 hours credit for FL* 201. Six hours will go toward their Graduation Requirements.
Students planning to enroll in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Management will be strongly advised by both the Admissions Office and the respective Colleges to take the SAT Foreign Language Test, and they will be enrolled by Registration and Records in the language course in which they place on this test. They will see this course on their schedules when they arrive at Orientation. Students who do not complete the SAT Subject Test and must take the FLL Placement Test will also be strongly advised by the CHASS Academic Affairs team to enroll for the course in which they place at the College Orientation session and during the session when they register for courses in the Computer Lab.
The above policies will become effective beginning in the First Session of Summer School, 2003, for all students and will be retroactively applied by Registration and Records to students who have already successfully completed these courses at NC State.
