Introduction:
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology offers an undergraduate
minor in Applied Sociology to all baccalaureate degree students at North
Carolina State University.
Objectives:
Of major importance in people's lives are the group situations in
which they find themselves. One's career not only involves directing
the activities of others but providing services to them. This essentially
social aspect of work means that the concepts, theories, and principles
of sociology are not only useful, but in many cases required for one
to function successfully in complex social situations.
To students in agriculture, engineering textiles, design, the biological
sciences, economics, etc., a minor in applied sociology should be of
considerable value. By linking such majors with the contents of this
minor, graduating seniors should be prepared to better carry out the
work, family, and citizen roles in which they will live their lives.
Admission to the Minor:
Admission to the minor will require a Grade Point Average (GPA)
of 2.0 or better after a minimum of 60 hours at NCSU (or equivalent
work if a transfer student) and a grade of C or better in a 200 level
sociology course.
Any student seeking this minor should contact the College of Agriculture
and Life Sciences (CALS) Teaching Coordinator of the Sociology Program.
(S)he will advise the student about the requirements of the major.
Procedure for Certification of Minor
Certification requires a GPA of 2.0 in all courses taken for minor
requirements.
Courses credited to the minor must have a letter grade of A, B, or
C.
The CALS Undergraduate Teaching Coordinator will review the student's
record and certify that the requirements for the minor in Applied Sociology
have been completed. Upon certification, the student's transcript would
include the statement "Minor in Applied Sociology."
