The Honors Program provides the opportunity for all CHASS students
in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology to pursue an individualized
program of study based on close working relationships with departmental
faculty. Not only can this program enhance the student's educational
experience, but by developing research and writing skills, students
will be better prepared for graduate study, law school, or employment
in the public and private sectors. Students completing the Honors Program
graduate with honors in their major, receive special recognition at
graduation, are awarded a certificate of merit, have the achievement
noted on their transcript, and can claim honors distinction on applications
for advanced study or employment.
Admission:
To be eligible for admission to the S&A Honors Program, a student must
have achieved (1) junior standing, (2) an overall grade point average
of 3.25 or higher, (3) a 3.25 average in the major, and (4) completion
of at least 12 hours of coursework in the major. The grade point averages
must be maintained to remain in the Honors Program. Students who qualify
are sent a letter from the Undergraduate Administrator prior to the
beginning of the fall semester.
Requirements:
The Honors Program requirements include satisfactory completion of at
least twelve hours of coursework taken for honors credit and an honors
thesis. The twelve hours of honors credit is usually fulfilled by completing
nine hours of honors coursework in the major and three hours credit
in SOC 498H or ANT 498H. The honors coursework must be in courses at
the 300 level or above taken for honors credit (not including courses
for which the student has already received credit). SOC 300, SOC 400,
and SOC 401 are eligible for inclusion as honors credit courses. If
SOC 300 is selected, the required number of honors credit is increased
to thirteen hours. To complete the Honors program successfully, a student
must have a 3.25 average in the major and overall.
"Students who complete Honors Programs will be recognized by having
an 'Honors' seal on their diplomas, an 'H' beside their name in the
commencement program, the phrase 'completed Honors program in (college,
department, or major)' on their permanent transcripts, and their names
in the Honors Convocation program."
