  Dynamic Department

We are a department of outstanding accomplishments and great potential. Faculty and graduate students work hard, contribute a lot, and enjoy the camaraderie of a closely knit culture. The graduate program trains excellent researchers and teachers and places graduates in superlative jobs, both academic and non-academic. Our1999 external review concluded that "the department appears poised to make strides that could move its programs to a much higher position of national prominence." We proudly point to:

  • an outstanding faculty, trained at leading universities and deeply involved in their scholarship, teaching, and outreach
  • a broad range of research projects, quantitative and qualitative, domestic and international, collaborative and solo
  • prominent publications by faculty, graduate students, and faculty-student collaborations
  • our selection by the American Sociological Association as a model preparing future faculty (PFF) program
  • our commitment to training graduate students of color
  • our solid and innovative teaching, from teacher training for our graduate students to distance education
  • the great jobs our graduates get
  • the awards our graduate students win
  • our engaged model for sociology: we put our research to work to make a difference in the world
