Professional Socialization for First Year Graduate StudentsAll first year students are required to take a one-credit proseminar in their first semester. This proseminar, entitled "Contemporary Sociology, " introduces the students to skills needed for graduate school, to the wide range of visions sociologists hold for their discipline, to current areas of hot debate within the discipline, and to a variety of ways that sociology engages with the problems and politics of the social environment. The teaching team includes the regular instructor, a senior graduate student, and the Director of Graduate Programs.
