- Ginnie
Aldige’ was recently elected Nominations Chair-elect for the Sociology of
Mental Health Section Elections. Congratulations Ginnie!
RECENT
SCHOLARLY ACTIVITIES:
- One of our alumni, Sheila Cotton, received grant
funding from the National Science Foundation for Investigating
Gender-Based Differences in Perception and Use of IT as Factors in IT
Career Choice. Grant amount is $499,385.
- Scott Fitzpatrick was recently invited by Dr. Michiko
Intoh (Museum of
Ethnology, Osaka) to help co-organize the archaeology symposia
for the
2007 Pacific Science Congress in Okinawa. This interdisciplinary
conference is held every 3-4 years in Pacific Island and East Asian
countries and is focused on encouraging
international collaboration within
the region and discussing current issues in the
sciences.
- "Southern Vintage Sociology," the transcript
of a 1973 Southern Sociological Society session including some of the
earliest members of the SSS, is running as a series in The Southern
Sociologist. SSS members can find this on the web. The original session,
the recording, and the transcript were coordinated by then Assistant
Professor Ron
Wimberley. The piece was first published in The
Southern Sociologist 30 years ago in 1974. It features stories and accounts of
the early SSS by Horace Hamilton, William Cole, Joseph Himes, and others. Those
who knew any of the participants should still hear and recognize their voices
from the text.

Society for the Study of Social Problems has announced its 54th
annual meeting August 13-15 at the Cathedral Hill Hotel in San Francisco California. The preliminary program is

- The Education Surveys Division at Research Triangle
Institute, an independent, multi-disciplinary research organization has an
immediate opening for an Education Analyst 3/Research Education Analyst 1
to assist project activities in instrument design, data collection, data
file construction, analysis, and reporting for large-scale studies in elementary,
secondary, and postsecondary education. Candidates must possess a master's
or doctoral degree in a social science or related area, or an equivalent
combination of education, training, and experience. The position also
requires experience with survey research methods (preferably in the field
of education), a working knowledge of SAS, and strong written and oral
communication skills. Candidates must be self-motivated, able to work well
independently and in teams, and able to establish and maintain good
