Delinquency and depression among adolescents share some similar causes (see top table). These causes, however, may have different effects for males and females because their respective gender socializations vary.

Consider youths living in disadvantaged neighborhoods, burdened by many stressful life events, lacking social support, and carrying deviant self-images. Such males may respond to these situations with delinquency, while such females may respond with depression (see bottom table).
